GB Find Out Opposition For Emerging Nations Championship

Post published March 8, 2017

The GB men’s team have been drawn in group B with Luxembourg, Georgia and Malta for this summer’s IHF Emerging Nations Championship in Bulgaria. The competition takes place in Gabrovo and Veliko from 12-18 June 2017.

The Championship is an Under-24 event, with three over-age players allowed, but GB will be sending a young team with a view to building for the future. Interim Head Coach Ricardo Vasconcelos, has drawn many players from the GB U21 squad which he also coaches.

Commenting on the draw Vasconcelos said “This is good draw as it provides us with strong opposition, which is what we need to develop. Luxembourg and Georgia were in the same group for the 2020 Euro qualifiers (phase 1) and were only just eliminated by Italy after very closes games, while Malta is always a difficult opponent. Regardless of the draw our goal remains unchanged as we focus on building a team for the future. The boys have been working very hard and, although we have been unlucky to lose several key players through injury, we are progressing and looking forward to competing”.
